12TH STEP VOLUNTEER SIGNUP FORM
12th Step Volunteers can sign up to take calls from suffering alcoholics. Volunteers are asked to make contact with the newcomer AS SOON AS YOU CAN AFTER BEING CONTACTED BY WAIA and to do one of the following: make a personal visit with another alcoholic, pick up the newcomer and bring them to a meeting, meet the newcomer at a meeting, or talk on the phone with them about active alcoholism and recovery.
Answering the Phones
One of WAIA’s goals is to have a live person answer the telephones seven days a week, 24 hours a day to reach out to the still suffering alcoholic. There are two options for answering the phones:
Desk Volunteers: The phones are answered in the office itself from 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM daily by Desk Volunteers.
The four daytime shifts are coordinated by the Office Assistant:
- 10:00 AM-1:00 PM
- 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
- 4:00 PM–7:00 PM
- 7:00 PM–10:00 PM

Nightwatch Volunteers: From 10:00 PM-10:00 AM the phones are forwarded to the personal phones of Night Watch volunteers.
The Night Watch Committee coordinates the volunteers that answer the WAIA phones remotely from 10:00 PM – 10:00 AM. Each day has two shifts: one from 10 PM until 6 AM and one from 6 AM until 10 AM. Volunteers field calls relating to AA, such as meetings in the area, relaying AA information to newcomers, and discussing alcoholism in general.
